AFRICA, Ivory Coast Dan mask. Mask with an anthropomorphic face in a perfect oval. The convex forehead is marked by a median ridge, which extends into a broad, scarified nose. Split coffee-bean eyes enhanced with kaolin. The half-open mouth reveals metal teeth and a tongue represented by red cloth. Remains of old studs on the skull, originally used to attach a headdress. There are also circular marks on the forehead where upholsterer's nails would have been. Wood, metal, fabric. Very old. Fastening holes all around. H. 23.5 cm. Wear, wormholes, a few accidents and chips, notably to the surface patina in places.
