LIMOGES, early 16th century
Attributed to Nardon PENICAUD, circa 1520-1525.
Curved plate in painted polychrome enamel and translucent enamel on pewter with gold highlights depicting the Annunciation.
Dark red ground counter-enamel with traces of gold.
14.3 x 11.3 cm.
Minor damage to the upper border and missing corner.

Here we can clearly recognize the style of Nardon Penicaud, author of a Crucifixion signed and dated 1503, preserved at the Musée de Cluny [inv. Cl. 2232]: great gentleness of expression, treatment of the faces and hands with light spots on the eyelids, nose, lips, chin and fine finger joints, as well as a chromatic range giving pride of place to blues, greens and gold highlights.
A comparison with another curved plaque of the same workmanship, attributed to Nardon, depicting a Virgin at prayer in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, confirms this attribution [inv. 16745].

Provenance :
Maître Maurice RHEIMS, Vente de la Collection Van GELDER et divers Amateurs, Hôtel Drouot, salle 1, June 24-25, 1953, lot 290, reproduced.
