Composite marine (?) dagger.
Multi-part handle in polished or molded ivory (Elephantidae spp) (pre-Convention), with pommel carved with an eagle's head, open beak; one eye in faceted red stone.
Straight, chamfered iron crosspiece.
Triangular-section blade with two cutting edges and two median ridges.
With black leather scabbard with two brass fittings (unsuitable / too long).
Reassembled in the second half of the 19th century.
Total gross weight (with scabbard): 299 g.
Blade length: 24 cm - Total length (with scabbard): 42.2 cm - Width: 8.5 cm.
Cracks and a few chips and splinters to the hilt; hole under the throat (probably former attachment of a guard branch); old restoration to the beak; plugged through-hole; accident to the eye and the other missing; a few spots of oxidation to the blade; wear to the scabbard.
CIC Certificate of commercial activity no. 2023/BE04778/CE, issued in Brussels on December 5, 2023.

The handle with the eagle's head could come from a Saxon (German or English?) or American saber, due to the possible presence of a guard (hole under the throat), and seems to have been reassembled, with disparate elements, in the second half of the 19th century.

The object described above, containing Elephantidae spp (I/A) elephant ivory, pre-dates March 3, 1947, within the meaning of EC Regulation 338/97 of 09/12/1996 determining that "worked specimens acquired more than fifty years previously" may be marketed after obtaining a CIC (K) prior to any sale, in accordance with EU Commission Regulation 2021/2280 of 16/12/2021, which came into force on January 19, 2022.
