Jean ROYERE (1902-1981) Rare herbarium-style bar coffee table, circa 1939. Rectangular frame in cream lacquered oak, decorated with panels of dried flowers fixed under glass and framed by coral lacquered strips, opening with two doors and flaps. It stands on a slightly recessed plinth base. Wear, scratches, paint chips, stains, discolorations and alterations to the dried flowers. H.: 25cm. - L.: 100cm. - D.: 40cm. Provenance: Acquired by Mr. L. (architect and friend of Jean Royère), then by descent. This piece of bar furniture was acquired at the 29th Salon des artistes décorateurs et de la lumière in 1939, the boudoir that Jean Royère presented at the show being a kind of manifesto. This piece of furniture shows that Jean Royère lacked neither humor nor fantasy, and that he rehabilitated ornament as a structural element. Bibliography: Ensembles mobiliers, Bibliothèque de l'image, 2005, our example reproduced on plate 18. Jean Royère, Galerie Jacques Lacoste and Galerie Patrick Seguin, Vol. 1, 2012, our copy reproduced p. 84 and p. 88. Pierre Emmanuel Martin-Vivier, Jean Royère, Norma, 2002, our copy reproduced on p. 97. Pierre Emmanuel Martin-Vivier, Jean Royère, Norma, 2017, our copy reproduced on p. 104.
