VAL de LOIRE, première moitié du XVème siècle
Recumbent of a couple.
Carved limestone, in several pieces.
Man and woman reclining side by side, hands folded in front of them; the man wearing a chaperon and the woman a bead.
Length: 173 cm - Width: 69 cm.
Wear, accidents and missing parts.

Provenance:
According to family tradition, this recumbent may have come from the Abbey of La Guiche, near Blois (Loir-et-Cher), destroyed in the 18th century.
A couple's recumbent carved from a monolithic block is quite rare in funerary art.
Other examples are known, however, notably from the Limousin region: one is preserved in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Limoges, from the former church of Saint-Martin, and another can be seen in the church of Le Chalard, also in the Haute-Vienne region.
