Deckelpokal (composite) in silver (min. 800), gilded and white with repoussé decoration, consisting of :
- a tall cylindrical bowl with flared rim, decorated with a frieze of alternating cartouches featuring flowers (tulips, daffodils, etc.) or fruit.
- a domed lid, decorated with alternating leafy masks and shells, with a wide cut-out lip, and topped with a bouquet of flowers in white silver blades.
This lid has probably been added, as the rabbet is wider than the neck and the decoration is unrelated to the bowl.
- a leg consisting of a tube, secured to the base by a pin, clad with two small flared rings adorned with geometric friezes, and a cruciform motif, in melted white silver, decorated with consoles with heads of women in headdresses.
- and a trumpet-shaped foot with a shoulder decorated with friezes of ovals and leaves on a grained background.
On the foot: Goldsmith's hallmark: G.S., probably LEIPZIG, late 17th century.
[To be compared with the hallmark referenced in M. ROSENBERG, Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen, Frankfurt, 1923, p. 251, no. 3063, as that of an unidentified silversmith active in LEIPZIG at the end of the 17th century].
The lid, bowl and foot bear the Austrian hallmark, used from 1806 to 1807 to mark works in 750/1000th silver (12 löthige) for the town of LEMBERG (now in Poland).
These elements and the two foot rings are embossed with the Swan in FRANCE.
Total weight : 510 g. - Total height: 45.5 cm.
Wear to the gilding, down to the piercing on the foot; a few scratches and bumps; small cracks at the edges of the various elements; soldering on the reverse of the foot; a few accidents and missing parts to the lid bouquet.
