École de CUZCO, Dans le goût du XVIIIème siècle
The Virgin Mary Child surrounded by a floral garland, spinning, spindle in hand.
Oil on canvas.
43.5 x 30.5 cm.
She is depicted as an Inca noblewoman, a nusta, with her richly embroidered cape, held in place by a crowned brooch, her hair held in place by a headband and a gold earring.
Repainting. Old varnish dirty and yellowed.

Repetition of a theme often treated in 18th-century Andean painting, inspired by the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary and derived from Italian and Spanish Baroque painting (Cf. Catalogue of the Barbosa - Stern collection, Mestizo, del renacimiento al barocco andino. Ricardo Estabridis Cardenas, Virgen nina hilandera, p. 125 & 126 - Lima 2008).

A version of the Virgin Mary Spinning (circa 1730 - 1760) is preserved in Peru at the Pedro de Osma Museum (Cf. Catalogue of the exhibition Cuzco, Splendeur de la Peinture Péruvienne au XVIIème et XVIIIème siècle, pp. 112 - 115 Monaco, Grimaldi Forum 2004).
