Ecole de Gentile da FABRIANO (vers 1370 - 1427) Virgin and Child, also known as Madonna of Humility. Gold tempera and background on softwood panel. Hallmarked aureoles. 35 x 24.3 cm. Accents, gaps and restorations. The Virgin's morphology, with her delicately elongated face and discreetly rounded chin, recalls certain models by Gentile da Fabriano (Berlin, Staatliche Museen; Perugia, Galleria Nationale dell' Umbria). The cruciferous halo, with its three elements of the cross painted red, can be found in the work of the leading late Gothic masters of his time, such as Jacobello del Fiore (c. 1370 - 1439) and Michele Giambono (c. 1400 - 1462).
