The novel was placed on the Index by the Vatican, a measure that contributed to its success. The manuscript contains numerous erasures and corrections; it is complete with the novel's nine chapters. The first page bears the original title: La Villa des Mystères, crossed out in blue pencil and replaced by the new title: Les Bacchantes. Enclosed: - plans and sketches (22 ff. various sizes); - a project file for a stage adaptation in 4 acts and 15 tableaux: list of characters under the title La Villa des Mystères (2 ff), "draft" of the plot (14 p.), script and dialogues (35 p.), and ms (88 p. with typed passages pasted in), plus a 2nd version of the 1st tableau (11 p.), with a long L.A.S of remarks by Jacques HÉBERTOT (16 p. in-4).
