Louis JOUVET (1887-1951)
Handwritten letter on a pre-stamped lace-edged letter-card from Louis Jouvet sent from Rethel (Ardennes), addressed to his "cousin", Aline Bordas dated July 9, 1905.
14 x 11 cm.
Small loss in one corner.

"My cousin
I don't need to tell you how much I've suffered during the long days I've just spent between a wound that wouldn't heal and the fever of an examination. It is with both regret and joy that I am writing these few lines to inform you that yesterday I passed my philosophy exam at the Sorbonne (compare A Conte's classification of sciences with those of H Spencer). I am hopeful that on Tuesday morning, if you have not received anything, I will fail.
- Your silence has shown your displeasure. Why cousinette? Am I a big, indifferent, banal cousin? In that case, I'll put up with this forced silence? - alas, it wasn't until June 28th that they stopped bandaging me twice a day.
it was with my arm still wrapped in swaddling clothes up to the wrist, my hand smeared with tincture of iodine, that I appeared yesterday at the Sorbonne.
I had neither the time nor the means to write to you. Today I won't be long because you must understand that I must be tired waiting for at least a word on it. i send you my ever sincere and ever affectionate regards."
