Lucien DAUDET (1878-1946)
48 L.A.S., 1892-1940 and n.d., to Lucien and/or Marthe DAUDET (or their son François); 128 pages in-8 or in-4.

Beautiful and interesting family correspondence.
Some letters are signed with fanciful pseudonyms: Durochard, Téteigne; 3 are illustrated with small drawings... The first letters are addressed to his brother Léon, "Frérot chéri". In them, Lucien gives news of Champrosay in 1892: amateur theater; visits from Edmond de Goncourt, the Rosny brothers, Porel (who is staging Madame Sans-Gêne), Frantz Jourdain, etc.; his painter's studio; and then, of course, his home. From Monte Carlo, then from the Château de La Roche in 1924, he wrote to his sister-in-law Marthe, recalling with emotion the tragedy of Philippe Daudet's death; he also spoke of Reynaldo Hahn. On July 1, 1935, two long, very funny letters recount his stay in Martigues, and the inauguration ceremonies of the Fontvielle mill, with plenty of anecdotes and gossip. From Paris, 31 rue de Bellechasse, he comments on Léon's works: Les Universaux, Panorama de la République; he reacts to the Popular Front... In August 1938, he stays with his mother at the Château de La Roche (near Chargé); he advises Lucien on a biography of Marie-Antoinette. Letters from 1939-1940 concern the war and Hitler; long, almost daily letters to "Marthe chérie" on his mother's state of health; Lucien is then overcome by the memory of his mother (who died on April 23, 1940); worries about the estate... Two letters are addressed to his nephew François.
We enclose 11 L.A.S. to his "Maman chérie" Julia Daudet, 1900-1925 and n.d., beautiful and tender correspondence. Plus a file "Dactylos lettres à Maman chérie de Farnborough Hill" (1900-1914).
