Santiago RUSIÑOL (1861-1931)
Autograph manuscript signed, La Nuit de l'Amour; 96 pages small in-4.
Manuscript of the unpublished French version of this "lyrical drama in one act" by the Catalan painter, whose music was composed by Enric MORERA (1865-1942).
The Catalan version, La Nit de l'amor, was first performed on January 20, 1905 in Barcelona, at the Romea Theater, and published in Barcelona that same year.
Léon Daudet, to whom this manuscript was given by the painter, wrote: "Santiago Rusiñol, playwright and novelist, knows how to choose and treat subjects in accordance with his nature. He brings to this choice a high wisdom, a balance that is like the fixed and solid axis of his dazzling inventions. The Night of Love, a tragic and lyrical scene of the night of Midsummer, [...] and so many other dramatic works, are distinguished from all contemporary Spanish production by a natural grace, a simplicity, a passionate warmth and a melancholic gaiety without equal. Others write for a living. Santiago projects his personality, incorporates the spectacle of the world and enjoys this coming and going.
Enclosed:
A neat copy of the Catalan version (sewn notebook of 46 sheets); and 2 copies of his album Jardins d'Espanya (Barcelona, Can Thomas 1903), are one with sending a.s. to Leon Daudet.
