ALLEMAGNE (?), fin du XVIIème ou début du XVIIIème siècle Truncated cone-shaped goblet on a small silver (min. 800) gilt and white frame with engraved decoration in three cartouches, bordered by flowers, of the Holy Women arriving at the tomb of Christ, empty and two scenes of agricultural work, pruning in the month of March (Martius) or planting in the month of April (Aprillis), titled above. Goldsmith's mark : H.G or H.C Other unidentified mark. Weight : 129 g. - H. : 10 cm. Wear and scratches to the gilding; some small shocks; small tear on the reverse and small cracks. The composition illustrating the month of March seems to be inspired by two plates of Etienne DELAUNE (1518-1583), Protestant goldsmith and engraver, active in Paris, then in Germany after the Saint Barthélémy. These are two plates from the "Second Suite of the Months of the Year", dating from 1568: the 3rd, from "March", depicting a man pruning trees and a woman carrying a bundle, a ram lying among clouds, at the top of the composition, and the 8th, from "August", depicting a man cutting grain and a man forming a sheaf on the ground. The one illustrating the Resurrection is to be compared with a print by Georg PENCZ, engraver active in Nuremberg around 1500-1550 [Cf. Michèle HEBERT, BN, Dép. des Estampes, Inventaire des gravures des Ecoles du Nord, 1440-1550, T. 2, Paris, 1983, p. 91, ill. 2002].
