SAINTE-BEUVE Charles-Augustin (1804-1869).

L.A.S. "Ste Beuve", This Wednesday [31 December 1862], to Jeanne de TOURBEY; 1 page in-8.

On Flaubert [who had been offended by Sainte-Beuve's criticism of Salammbô].

He thanks his friend: "I was indeed yesterday, even more in fear than suffering, but I had been all day, and I wanted to behave before the world like a big boy. I only retired early so as not to spoil anything. I was, on the contrary, happy to meet this brave and noble heart of Flaubert, so superior still to his talent and his books. We critics have an ugly job, there is only one way to do it well, and that is to do it honestly. He understood this very well and forgave me; I see it and I esteem him all the more.

General correspondence, t. XII, n° 3940.
