HEREDIA José-Maria de (1842-1905).

Autograph poem signed "JM. de Heredia", to F.M.R., Royat August 30, 1884; 2 pages in-8 (small disinfecting cracks, trace of tab on back).

Amusing poem for Robert de Montesquiou.

This epistle in verse, comprising six quatrains, is dedicated "to F.M.R." (inverted initials of Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac); it humorously denounces the picking of fake cotton edelweiss, real tourist catchers made "for the fake buttonhole" of Paul Bourget or J.J. Weiss. The manuscript, in black ink, has small disinfection cracks, due to the cholera epidemic that raged in the south of France during the summer and fall of 1884.

"The Edelweiss, Swiss snow flower

   That you pick in Saint-Moriz

Is not a flower of which one can

   To make bouquets in Chloris".
