VERONESE Paolo CALIARI dit (1528-1588).

L.A.S. "'Paolo Caliari Pittore", Venice January 5, 1578, to Marcantonio GANDINI in Treviso; 1 page in-fol., address; in Italian.

Very rare letter of the Venetian painter.

He addresses Marcantonio Gandini, "Molto Mag[nifi]co S[igno]re mio" [Gandini (†1587), a renowned translator of Greek classics, notably Plutarch and Xenophon, was also an architect], about the negotiations for the purchase of a property in the countryside, which he planned to buy in partnership with his brother Benedetto [Benedetto Caliari (1538-1598) was also a painter, and often collaborated with his brother Paolo]. He draws Gandini's attention to the fact that they should acquire not only the house, but also the land and its surroundings: "'è bene a eser assoluti patroni per atenderli senza impedimenti a lei dico che [...] in casa mia sara resoluto PATRONE"...

Provenance: Albin Schram collection (Christie's London, 3 July 2007, lot 270).
