SCUDÉRY Georges de (1601-1667) poète, romancier, auteur dramatique [AF 1650, 32e f]. L.A.S. "De Scudery", Paris May 15, 1654; 2 pages in-4 (small lack on one edge with loss of some letters). Beautiful and rare literary letter, speaking about Queen Christine of Sweden and her poem Alaric. Scudéry thanks his correspondent for his "civility" towards him, manifested in a letter "a nostre illustre Amy Mr CHAPELAIN [...] Je ne serois pas du Monde, si je ne scavois le rang que Mr votre pere et vous tenez y, entre les personnes que les belles Lettres ont rendues fameuses: et je serois estranger en mon propre pays, si j'ignorois la réputation que vous y avez. [...] It is very sweet for me to see myself obliged by a man whom I esteem. It is no less sweet for me to see the conformity which exists between us, in honoring the Queen of Sweden: and yielding to you in all things, I will only dispute this one. It is true that there is no friendship like love: since one suffers from rivals in the former, and one would like everyone to value what one values, and to know the price. In addition, Sir, having learned by your letter, that you were going to begin reading my Alaric [Alaric, ou Rome vaincue, heroic poem, "dedicated to the Serene Queen of Sweden"], I await with great impatience, the judgment that you will make of it: if it is advantageous to me, it will be my highest glory ". Provenance: Alfred SENSIER collection (February 11-13, 1878, n° 484), and Benjamin FILLON (July 15-19, 1878, VII, n° 956).
