MAQUET Auguste (1813-1888) romancier, collaborateur d'Alexandre Dumas. L.A.S. "Maquet", Paris November 1 [1881 ?], to Émile AUGIER; 4 pages in-8 in purple ink on mourning paper (wetness with small tear). On his candidacy for the Académie Française. "DUMAS [son] has often repeated to me that he wants to agree with you on all points of this matter. Listen to him. He puts an incredible grace and will into it. Mr. PASTEUR will have 20 to 22 votes. It is thought that Mr. Wallon and probably Mr. Laboulaye will run in extremis for Dufaure's seat. [Act with all your friendship for me, I mean, don't spare me, don't hide anything of the truth from me. It would be for me an immense joy and honor if I succeeded but if I must fail spare me this chalice ".
