LECONTE DE LISLE Charles (1818-1894) [AF 1886, 14e f]. Autograph poem signed "Leconte de Lisle", Hélène, 1845; and 8 L.A.S., 1847-1855, to M. TESSIÉ DU MOTAY; 3 pages in-fol. (split at the folds, edges a bit frayed), and 9 pages in-8 or in-12, some addresses. Autograph poem signed, Hélène. Long poem of 102 lines, dated "Juillet 1845", and published in La Phalange of July-December 1845 (the manuscript was used for printing, and bears on the back the address of "Monsieur Dumotay"); a dedication "to Paul de Flotte" has been crossed out. Beautiful tribute to Greece: "O you who grasp the living harmony Of the perfect form allied to the genius, Apostle in love with the ancient beauty, Come! - let us see again the enchanted archipelago ". Correspondence. He looks for a publisher for his book of poems (1847). In 1855, he looks for a place which would "withdraw him from the bottomless abyss in which I disappear from day to day", in particular in Zurich; he would like to obtain a "semi-official" certificate of the perpetual secretary of the Academy and of a member of the Institute; he has the support of Béranger, Patin, V. Cousin... He summarizes his career: "Having written to the Independent Review before 1848 - collaborator of Mr. Lamennais in the Peuple Constituant and in the Réforme - Author of the Poèmes Antiques, book crowned by the Académie Française in August 1854, and editor of the Revue des deux mondes from January 1st 1855 "... Attached is a L.A.S., Paris May 12, 1862 (1 p. in-8), thanking for his "flattering sympathies [] one of the masters of our literary Renaissance".
