LECLERC DE LA BRUÈRE Charles Antoine (1716-1754) auteur dramatique et librettiste (Dardanus de Rameau).
L.A., Rome 13 September 1752, to president ROUSANT; 3 pages in-4.

An amusing letter from Rome [La Bruère is secretary of embassy of the duke of Nivernais; he will die there two years later].

He asks him to help abbé RAYNAL to safeguard the interests of the Mercure against a new journal that one would like to found; abbé Raynal must have reminded M. de MALESHERBES "that by article 15 of the treaty of Aix la Chapelle Italy and the Mercure must remain in status quo. [] Joking aside, our representations are just in all justice, and it is not right that they should come to burn my house while I am here busy sanctifying myself. There is a certain Father Concina who has just written against the shows. He has chosen the wrong battlefield here where everyone goes to the opera. We are working to refute him, and his opponent will have the public for him. I will be well at ease that he is a little humiliated because he wrote against the president of MONTESQUIEU like a ferocious beast " He speaks with satisfaction of a retraction to which one forced the abbot, then makes share of a new dignity which one conferred to him in spite of him: "They put me of Arcadia not in quality of donkey and to avoid any suspicion instead of calling me Martin they gave me the name of Ermidoro and the Salaminian campaigns where I will be able to graze to my gogo"
