FLÉCHIER Esprit (1632-1710) prélat, évêque de Nîmes, orateur religieux [AF 1672, 10e f]. L.A.S. "Flechier", Versailles September 9 [1682?], to Reverend Father BOUHOURS, in Paris; 1 1/4 pages in-8, address with small red wax seal (broken); portrait enclosed. He has read "with delight" a part of his admirable history [La Vie de saint François Xavier [], apostre des Indes et du Japon ?]: "Nothing is written so purely, nor so judiciously as this life whose events are of themselves very curious, & very remarkable. Everything is painted so naturally, and there is so much vivacity and movement in the accounts, that one believes one is seeing what one is reading. It was right that you should give us a model for writing history, as you have given us for dialogue, and that you should put into practice so happily the beautiful observations you have made on language.
