Preparation of the new editions of Madame Bovary and Salammbô by Charpentier. [Maurice DREYFOUS (1843-1918), journalist and historian, was then the collaborator of the publisher Georges Charpentier. Flaubert wished to integrate in the re-editions of his two novels appendices clarifying their reception; for Madame Bovary, the pieces of the trial; and for Salammbô, his answers to the criticisms by Sainte-Beuve and by the orientalist Guillaume Froehner, who had questioned the historical rigor of Flaubert. But, contrary to Flaubert's wishes, the articles by Sainte-Beuve and Froehner will not be printed in an appendix; only Flaubert's responses will appear]. "I have just read the two articles by Frœhner and I am not of the opinion that they should be analyzed. It is more loyal & more cranial to print them in extenso. The 3 articles of Ste Beuve, my letter to him, the article of Frœhner, my answer, his second article and my reply should not hold more space in the volume Salammbô than the indictment of Pinard & the plea of Senard hold in Bovary! - & note that Salammbô is shorter than Bovary!
