MIRABEAU Honoré-Gabriel de Riquetti, comte de (1749- 1791) le grand orateur des debuts de la Revolution.

L.A.S. "Mirabeau fils", October 10, 1779, to M. BOUCHER; 1 page and a half in8.

Letter from prison. [Mirabeau is imprisoned at Vincennes, and BOUCHER, "the Good Angel", is in charge of the correspondence between the prisoner and his mistress Sophie MONNIER].

Mirabeau reproaches him for having sent him a package from Sophie without adding a word: "Your kindness does not deny itself; but the expressions are so sweet to me! Why are you depriving me of it? "He is worried because he learned through an indiscretion that Sophie is ill: "She had a fever on the 29th; on the 30th she wrote me a huge letter that must have killed her, and she did not say a word about it. I am deeply worried and sick myself [...] you will be kind enough not to let me languish in the uncertainty of my Sophie's health. ... My business is going backwards, my friend; and I do not understand how you can blame my grief on the latest incident that angered my father. He complains of the "phlegmatic" attitude of his counsel, DUPONT DE NEMOURS, who badly defends him in order to obtain his enlargement: "I answer you that he will do nothing, and that I will suffer from it. He will make me write eternally in Provence [to his wife and his father-in-law], because he is verbiageux, and that thus it does not cost him anything, and I will die here "?
