LETTRES DE SOLDAT. PLUVIÉ-

39 L.A.S. or L.A., 1797-1799, to his aunt the countess de GUIBERT or his father Jean-Fortuné de PLUVIÉ; 158 pages in-4 or in-8.

Very interesting correspondence on his campaigns in Italy and Egypt with Bonaparte. [The sister of the count of Guibert, Angélique de Guibert (1746-, had married the count of Pluvié; their son Fortuné considered the countess of Guibert as his adoptive mother, and called her "my good mother"]. Travelled from Paris to Lyon; Venice and Lake Garda; the Borromean Islands; stayed in Milan. Meeting with JOSEPHINE and BONAPARTE, who speaks to him with admiration of the Count of Guibert and appoints him as secretary of the legation in Genoa, at FAIPOULT. He then seems destined for a diplomatic career (autograph minute of a long letter to TALLEYRAND, evoking the memory of Guibert). Stay in Genoa, then in Rome. He is delighted to be called by Bonaparte to take part in the Egyptian campaign. In May 1798, he is in Civitavecchia, ready to embark for Egypt with MONGE and DESAIX. Relation of the crossing and the capture of MALTA; BONAPARTE then chooses him as aide-de-camp. The last letter is written from Cairo, "back from the Syrian expedition". Two copies of the letters are attached, one of which is in the hand of the Countess de Guibert (and the draft of one of her answers); an L.S. from TALLEYRAND concerning Fortuné PluviéGuibert, and 2 drafts of letters from Mme de Guibert to Talleyrand; 6 letters from Fortuné de Pluvié (the father), and various documents (including the copy by Fortuné Pluvié-Guibert of Mme de Guibert's notice about her husband). Provenance: Archives of the count de GUIBERT (sale 14 October 1993, n° 76).
