EISENHOWER Dwight David (1890-1969) general et homme politique americain, President des Etats-Unis.

L.A.S. "Ike", [London] July 7 [1944], to his wife Mamie EISENHOWER in Washington; 4 pages in-4, envelope with autograph signature for the censorship visa and autograph note to the bearer, his friend George ALLEN; in English.

Beautiful and long affectionate letter to his wife, four weeks after the Normandy landings. It tells of their son John, who graduated from West Point Military School on the very day of the D-Day Landings, and recalls the anniversary of their marriage (July 1, 1916). He entrusts this letter to George ALLEN; he assumes that Granny is at Fort Benning...he misses Johnny! While wanting to see him, he didn't know how much he appreciated having her by his side, until he left. Johnny would have loved to have been with her these last few days; leaving London the day after John's departure, Ike went through a lot of rain and mud, and saw many, many troops. He is very glad that so many officers have seen Johnny, some of them to talk to him a little. Nearly everyone arrived and at once reconciled themselves to Ike's good graces by praising his "admirable son," etc. He was very happy that so many officers had seen Johnny, some of them to talk to him a little. He received her lovely message on July 1st, but she made no mention of the flowers; he had arranged for her to have them. However, her message made him feel better. If only this war could be over before their next anniversary (the European war, that is), they will certainly be together, should he be absent without permission... He mentions an accumulation of small tasks due to the lack of office staff, an affair between his brother Milton and Jack Connolly.... Auntie must have been disappointed to miss John's graduation ! Ike thinks it was a blessing for John that Mike ended up producing children, otherwise John would have felt such a burden of responsibility in taking on the hopes of an entire family on his own that he would have run away to an island in the South Seas ! No doubt John
