COCTEAU Jean
Original DESIGN signed "Jean
Cocteau",[Arthur Rimbaud, 1959 ?]; lead pencil drawing, signed below right, 19.5 x 25 cm (framed).
Portrait of Arthur Rimbaud.
This drawing was made from the painting by Jef Rosman depicting Rimbaud in bed after being wounded by Verlaine. Cocteau copied part of the legend written on the screen behind the bed: "Chez
Madame Pincemaille, Brussels. Epilogue à la française". He represents Rimbaud in bed, lying on his side.
This drawing was probably made by Cocteau for the Rimbaudan bookseller and collector Henri MATARASSO (1892-1985).
On 31 July 1959, Cocteau wrote in his diary: "Visit to Matarasso. I give him the two portraits of Rimbaud" (Le Passé défini, VI, p. 585).
A magnificent tribute by Cocteau to the cursed poet.
