COCTEAU Jean
Autograph MANUSCRIT,[1946]; 1 page in-fol. filled with blue ballpoint pen on the back of an in-fol.
About Beauty and the Beast and cinema.
This first draft text is written on the back of a booklet published by "Victoire", a national organization of combatant solidarity, with 2000 copies printed on Rives vellum, cover illustrated by Dominique, with non-text illustrations by Paul Colin, Guy
Arnoux, Albert Decaris, Raymond Brenot.
"One day when I asked Renoir why he never went to see his films, he replied that he could no longer improve and that he was sick of them, that was the tragedy of the machine. It attracts us, eats us and stares at us. During the work of Beauty and the Beast, the simple manual work cleared my head and prevented me from judging myself.
Then it is the order of disorder,[...] the spirit of bogged down and paralyzed the judgment. We have to wait. And what should we do about it? The thing is done. Impossible to change".... Cocteau explains that he found the "true end" of his film late: "This new end conditioned a whole redesign of the images. ...] My team had given all its influence to the role of the Beast. And when Jean Marais turns into Prince Charming she couldn't take it anymore. As a result, the public loves the beast and regrets it. She prefers the caterpillar to the beautiful butterfly that comes out of it"... Etc.
